The Stencilled Home - Helen Morris
The Raj room
The Gustavian room |  The Arabian Nights bedroom

Every house I have owned has had a red and green room; I find this combination warm and comforting.

The inspiration for this room originally came from some attractive leather-bound art journals whose well worn covers were decorated with gold and black toolwork.

It only became known as the Raj room after the acquisition of a pair of limed wooden howdahs. Making the comfy velvet cushions then became a priority.

Hints and tips for achieving some of the designs used in the Raj room are provided below.

Step by step - Stencilling on frosted glass

Acrylic frosting varnish is usually a device to obscure viewing but in this case it was used as a decorative detail to create a frosted effect on some glass door panels. Follow the manufacturer's guidelines for cleaning your frosted glass.

Materials

  • Stencil
  • Acrylic frosting varnish
  • Foam sponge
  • Scrap paper
  • Saucer
  • Low tack tape

Method

1. Firstly make sure your glass is thoroughly clean. I wiped mine with vinegar and water. Then position your stencil using a low tack tape. You can use a stencil brush and dry paint method, a roller, or a foam sponge (as shown here). Firstly the corners of the sponge were gathered in the hand in order to make a firm applicator. The frosting varnish was then decanted into a shallow saucer and the sponge dabbed into it. The sponge was then blotted on to scrap paper to remove the excess varnish and then gently tapped through the stencil.

2. Acrylic frosting varnish takes a little longer to dry than acrylic paint, so wait about 30 seconds before repositioning.
Don't forget, you can find many more ideas and stencilling tips in Helen's book.
