The Stencilled Home - Helen Morris
The Arabian nights bedroom
The Gustavian room |  The Raj room

This room feels very much like a Hollywood film set and is fun, opulent and outrageous.

Less restrained than some of our other rooms, this one cannot claim an unpainted surface.

A major advantage here is that, because of the two walk-in wardrobes, we did not have to sacrifice any valuable wall space for storage.

Hints and tips for achieving some of the designs used in the Arabian nights bedroom are provided below.

Step by step - Stencilling on dark surfaces

This method involves undercoating the stencil with a lighter colour, and can be applied to many surfaces. The following demonstration shows the stencilling of the silk on the bed canopies and uses burgundy, veridian and gold water-based paints. You can undercoat your stencilling with white, which is fine, however my preference is for gold as I love its warmth and softness. You can obliterate the gold with your overlaid colours, or you can allow it to show through to provide highlights. When using fabric paints, follow the manufacturer's guidelines.

Materials

  • Stencil
  • Gold paint (suitable for walls and fabric)
  • Viridian and burgundy acrylic paint
  • 3 stencil brushes (1 large, 2 medium)
  • Repositioning spray
  • Kitchen paper
  • Tailor's chalk (to colour registration marks)

Method

1. Lightly spray the work surface with repositioning adhesive to hold the fabric in place. Stencil the gold undercoat first - apply a total coverage through your stencil, swirling the paint on with a large dry brush. As usual, use a different brush for each colour. 2. Apply the next colours
2. Apply the next colours wherever you want them using the remaining two brushes. Remember that without the gold underlayer, the dark colours will become lost when applied to a background of similar tone. Mark the registration points with tailor's chalk, rather than pencil.
3. Remove the stencil to reveal the design. All the stencils used are available from The Stencil Library
3. Remove the stencil
Don't forget, you can find many more ideas and stencilling tips in Helen's book.
