IF YOU CANNOT DRAW AN EGG SHAPE, WE SELL ONE - NC8

MAKING THE EGG SHAPE.
Trace the surface area of the box lid onto stencil film. Then draw an egg shape in the centre. If you cannot draw you could stencil an egg from the first overlay of NC8 assorted eggs from the Stencil Library. Cut out the egg shape to make a stencil. Keep the cut out bit you will need it later. Use a cutting board. The rule of cutting stencils is that you always pull the knife towards yourself. Manoeuvre the stencil around the knife. The hand guiding the stencil must always be behind the knife. If these rules are followed you should not cut yourself instead of the stencil.

Stencil the egg onto another piece of stencil film then cut another stencil from it but make this one an eighth of an inch bigger than the original.

Tape the template of the box lid into place and stencil the egg shape with black acrylic paint and a soft stencil brush. Take the paint from the lid of the pot onto the bristles of the brush and then circle the brush vigorously onto a wad of paper towel to work the paint into the brush and dry the tips of the bristles. Stencil your way into the shape from the edges. Remove stencil and protect the black egg with the piece of stencil film that you saved earlier. It should fit exactly over the image. Stencil the mini BW repeat across the top of the box in copper paint. The stencil film will prevent the egg being accidentally stenciled. If you want to make the copper paint more glitzy tip a little into a saucer and add a little rose gold powder into it. When handling powder you should wear a mask that prevents you from inhaling it. With a clean brush you can stencil little touches of crimson into the copper.

THE SIDES AND DRAWER
Trace around the side of the box onto stencil film to make a template of its shape. Make a second drawing on the template echoing the shape of the side but make it 3/4 inch smaller. Cut out the smaller drawing. You should now have a vaguely rectangular stencil. Tape the mini BW24 over the rectangle and stencil through both at the same time. Stencil mini BW24 all over the drawer front.

STENCILING WITH GLUE.
When you are sure that all the stenciled surfaces so far are thoroughly dry dust them all lightly with a touch of talc.

The next stage is to stencil with glue and the talc helps prevent excess stickiness. Put the lid template back in place. The egg shape should be exposed with the copper decoration protected. Position the cherry blossom stencil over the egg. Fiddle with it until you get the maximum number of flowers to appear inside the egg. Tape in place and stencil lightly with the Instant Gold Size using the dry brush method.. Remove the stencil. Brush rose gold powder over the stems and buds and pearl white onto the flowers. Brush away excess powder with a clean stencil brush or a soft cloth.

PUTTING ON THE DUTCH METAL.
Put a line of low tack tape across the front of the draw a fraction below the edge. Stencil the gap between edge and tape lightly with Instant Gold size. Remove tape and press foil onto the slightly tacky glue. Press hard. The foil will transfer. Do the same with all the edges of the drawer before you attempt to tidy it. Brush away the excess leaf with a stencil brush. Save the sweepings, they are useful for repairs.

Now put the egg shaped guard over the stenciled egg and frame it with the larger egg stencil. You should have a border surrounding the egg which you will gild with the leaf as you did with the drawer front. For the sides, protect the rectangle of stenciling with the cut out from the stencil and make a frame work of low tack tape to border it. Stencil it with the glue and foil. Decorate under the lid and the back of the box in the same way if you desire. After a few hours you can protect the finished item with high gloss acrylic varnish put your new drawer knob into place and glue on some fake jewels if you fancy.
