This is a stencilled canvas we recently created for a client who need some artwork for their apartment. First of all, we stencilled one of our geometric, japanese repeat stencils over the whole piece in a fairly muted colour. The chinoiserie peony plant in a pot stencil was then stencilled over top in slightly bolder colours. Pattern on top of pattern can work extremely well if you pick the right combination of patterns and colours. For example, this combination works well because of the contrast between the geometric repeat and curvy, flowery motif on top. Also, a contrast of colours is necessary so that both patterns can be seen separately from one another.
