I have a stencil border in a room right now but I want to cover up that stencil and replace it with a new one. I was curious if you could reccommend a technique for this or do I just have to use primer over the old stencil? The existing stencil is a pretty dark color. Thank you very much!

Thank you for your enquiry. From your message, I cannot tell if you just want to cover the stencilling or whether you are going to paint the whole wall. If you are going to paint the whole wall, then I would recommend painting over the stencilling with an obliterating paint as it is quite dark first, then proceed with painting your whole wall the desired colour. An obliterating paint is simply a more opaque paint designed for covering strong colour. If you just want to paint over the stencilled border, then first I would mask if off using some low tack decorating tape just above and just below. Again, because the stencilling is dark, I would perhaps use an obliterating paint first and then paint with your wall colour. Please note, that even if you are using the same wall colour as before, because the paint on the wall has been there for a while, you might notice a faint difference between the old wall paint and the freshly applied part. You could actually paint your "band" a totally different colour and then apply the stencil pattern to that if wanted. I hope that has helped. If you have more questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Hi, Love your stencil designs but though you state most are single layer, we don't know which ones are not. I am particularly interested in the large peacock feather (co 19-L) and ikebana ( ja 136 ) and would like to know how many layers each has. thanking you in advance. diane

Thank you for your enquiry. Most of our stencils are single layer. If they are in more than one layer then they tend to be shown in more than one colour (but not always). We are always happy to confirm the number of layers for any stencil design. CO19-L Peacock Feather and JA136 Ikebana are both single layer designs. The peacock feather does come in three sections (top, middle and bottom) with registration marks to make it easier to manage. If you require a single layer design in more than one layer, we can look at doing a custom version for you. Please e-mail us at sales@stencil-library.com to discuss your options.

Thank you for your message. I am sorry to hear you were experiencing problems. What should happen is: you should see both a picture and underneath it a code number, name and price in pounds sterling. If you click on the price, that will bring up the currency converter so you can see the price in your currency. If you click on the code number, that will put the item in your shopping basket. If you would please e-mail me at rachel@stencil-library.com with the stencil you are looking at and more details about exactly what is going wrong, then I will get the technical department to look into it and resolve the problem. I look forward to hearing from you.

First, I am amazed by the selection and quality of designs in your library! Beautiful!

Second, I just placed an order with you for the CD-ROM catalog, but now I see that you recommend ordering from your US distributor for US orders. As I'm sure this would cut down on shipping time (I'd like to get my hands on that catalog as soon as possible!), is there any way to have my order go through your US distributor so that I don't have to wait for it arrive from the UK?
Reply from Rachel at The Stencil Library

Thank you for your enquiry. I am so glad you like our range! Because your order contained other items that I know our US distributor doesn't stock and because the order has already been placed with us, then the order will have to come from us. I am processing your order now and will dispatch it today so you will get it quickly. When you come to order stencils, you can order through our distributor. They do have some of the stencils in stock, but many will still come from us direct in the UK. However, we work very hard to dispatch promptly so that the dispatch time is kept to a minimum.

I am interested in purchasing a stencil border for my wood floor (approx. 14 ft. x 8 ft.) I don't quite understand how the stencil works for a border, though, if it is only 4" by 12". What is the technique for getting it all the way around the room?
Reply from K. Car at The Stencil Library

When you purchase a stencil which is designed as a border it will have registration marks on it that you can match up to continue the design in a staight line. When you come to a corner you could mitre it using a piece of paper to block out the design. Use a square or rectangle of paper and fold it in half diagonally to form a 90 degree angle. Stencil the border and as you approach a corner place the paper over the stencil with the diagonal edge crossing it to the point of the corner. Stencil your border up to the edge of the paper. Remove both the paper and the stencil. Reposition the paper over the diagonal area you have just stencilled and reposition your stencil. Then begin stencilling the border in its new direction.

Also, is there a way to stencil on paper(and if so what kind) and then glue them to the ceiling. the ceiling is 12 ft taqll and will be difficult to reach. Thanks for your response and assistance.

Thank you for your enquiry. Gilding can be pretty flexible so it might work on your stars. I am not sure how you are creating your 2-D star but if you e-mail me sales@stencil-library.com with more specific information then I will be happy to tell you how you could gild them. I don't see why you couldn't gild or stencil your stars onto some paper, cut them out and stick them to your ceiling. I would use a thick paper - lining paper for walls would be perfect. And make sure you use a substantial glue to stick them on so that they don't start to unpeel over time. If you are using lining paper then a wallpaper paste would be ideal. Thank you Rachel Morris, for your prompt response. I am totally fascinated with the repertoire of the stencil collection in your library--simply marvellous and stellar, they are.

I intend to stencil the Japanese/Chinese stencil on my red mahogany furniture <dresser, desk and cabinet>, with golden paint, for a golden & antique touch.

I need the reduced-size stencil as shown in your library, to be applied on the drawer of the furniture.

For JA138 & JA139,would it be possible with 77.4x93.6 mm?
JA114 268x427 mm?
JA115 259x250 mm?

Please quote me a price,as I intend to purchase a number of these in the JA and IN collection, merci.

I have some Chinese landscape <San Sui> pattern that I would like to apply to to my furniture as well, can you tailor make them for me ? I have the digital image of these sansui pattern, and I can email to you for your assessment. Say yes, and make my day? S'il vous plait.

The sansui pattern no doubt will also enrich your Chinese/Japanese/oriental library collection portfolio as well. These are just stellar, glamorous and must see.

Born to stencil,
:Evan

I am really glad you like our stencils and thank you for taking the time to tell us. We think we will be able to do JA138 @ 20% which would make it about 77mm tall. It will be more fragile obviously, but as long as you take care it should be all right. We cannot do JA139 in a similar size because it has a lot more detail and would be way too fragile for you to use. We can also do JA114 @ 72% which would make it 268mm x 380mm and JA115 @ 55% which would make it about 254mm x 250mm. We can also look at making custom stencils for you. Just e-mail me the designs and the sizes and if they can be done, I will get back to you with prices etc. I look forward to seeing them and to hearing from you.

Thank you for your enquiry. Although we can alter the size of our stencils in most cases, we are not able to shrink this particular stencil as small as you would like. It would be too fragile for you to use. I am sorry we are not able to accomodate your needs in this case. But, if you can have the stencil bigger, please e-mail me with the larger size and I will be happy to investigate that possibility for you.

Thank you for your message. How very intriguing! We spent a lot of time researching Japanese design when we were designing the Japan range of stencils, but never came across any references to kimono stencils. We would love to see pictures of them if you want to e-mail them to us at sales@stencil-library.com. If we find or receive any further information on your stencils, we will certainly pass it on to you.

Thank you for your enquiry. We keep our shipping costs very simple and very low. Standard shipping to the US (or anywhere outside of Europe) is a flat fee of 5.00 GBP (about 9.00 US dollars) regardless of the size of the order or where you are. This is for airmail and takes about 7-10 working days. If needed, we can also ship by courier. Just contact us if you need this option as the price does vary according to the size of the order. We look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you for your enquiry. I am happy to confirm that in the case of GMT77 Motif No. 14, the cut out area (i.e. holes) is shown in black. This is the case with most of the stencils shown on the site, but there are a few exceptions where the cut out area is shown in white. It is always a good idea, if you are unsure, to ask us for confirmation. If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

Can the point size of letters in your sayings and proverbs be reduced (for example to 3" or 4" high as opposed to the 7" height in your online catalogue)?
Reply from Rachel at The Stencil Library

Thank you for your enquiry. We can shrink and enlarge most of our stencils to meet your requirements. All you need to do is e-mail us with the code number of the particular stencil you are interested in and the size you would like and we will get back to you with confirmation that it is possible and a price. In the case of the proverbs, we have shrunk some of them by 50% before and they seem to be fine however, please e-mail us with the particular stencil you are interested in and the height you want and we will get back to you. When shrinking a stencil, we cannot make them too small or they will become too fragile to use. I look forward to hearing from you.

I am interested in doing some stencilling on an outside brick wall. Can you please recommend what paint you would use for this. Also, after reading the email of textured walls (Leah, 8th Aug) do you think I will have a similar problem on a painted brick wall? Looking forward to a stencilling adventure.
Reply from Lesley at The Stencil Library

Hi Simone We have successfully used Liquitex paint on all of our outside projects for the past 10 years. You will find a colour chart in our accessories section. Another thought is to use masonary paint but the Liquitex will probably be cheaper and a better colour range. As we told Leah on 8th August you will need tape and spray to hold the stencil and follow the instructions so that your paint will not leak. You can always call and speak to Helen or Rachel (they've both done walls)if you would like further help.

I'm confused. Is the measurements width x height or height x width. I'm trying to match the columns AR9-M, middle section AR1-M and AR12-M. Also, do the arches AR15-M match size with the columns? Thank you.
Reply from Rachel at The Stencil Library
Date: 22 Aug 2005 10:05:27 GMT
Thank you for your enquiry. The sizes are always listed height first x width. With regards to AR9, AR1 and AR12, you need to order the same size to get them to match up to one another so you are right to consider all of them in the medium size. AR15 arch is meant to match the pillar stencils (code numbers AR27-AR41) and again, to get them to match you need to order the same size in both. However, I think that the width of AR1-M @ 5" will match up quite well with the AR15-M arch. The widest bit on AR9 capital right at the top will be wider than the bit of the arch at the base where the two would meet, but I think it would still look OK. I don't know what height you wanted to make your column overall, but if you e-mail us sales@stencil-library.com and let me know what height you would want the column to be, I will look at it against the height of the medium arch and let you know whether they will work in proportion to one another. We are here to help you work it all out before you order. I look forward to hearing from you.

I love your stencils and I am hoping to use them in decorating our home, but in the past I have tried to use other stencils and haven't had much success getting them to stick to our textured wall. I'm wondering if you have you suggestions for your stencils and getting them to stay put on a textured wall as you apply paint. Thanks
Reply from Rachel at The Stencil Library
Date: 8 Aug 2005 08:39:11 GMT
Dear Leah, Thank you for your enquiry. I am really glad you like our range. I recently had to work on a textured wall so encountered the same problem. Normally we recommend using either a spray repositioning adhesive or a low tack tape to hold your stencil in place, but in the case of textured walls, neither on their own are adequate. I actually used both together and in the case of the tape, used a wide version (about 2" wide). Using the two should hold your stencil in place. Keep in mind when stencilling a textured wall where your stencil cannot lie absolutely flat against it, that it is even more important that you stencil with a tiny amount of paint so that the paint goes on practically dry. Please do not hesitate to ask if you have further questions or need more tips about stencilling on a textured wall.

Dear Tricia, Thank you for your enquiry. In the main, the sizes listed refer to the actual design (the overall stencil film is bigger). But there are a few exceptions to this rule. If you e-mail sales@stencil-library.com and give us the code number of the stencil you are interested in, we will be happy to confirm the size of the actual design so you are sure of exactly what you are getting. We also have the facility to either shrink or enlarge stencils in most cases if the size as standard does not suit your needs. Once again, please e-mail us with the code number and your requirements and we will confirm that the size can be changed and give you a price.

It is a sheet of component cherry blossom parts that you can build and "grow" to go in any direction you want. The sheet size is 22" (55.9cm) x 25" (63.5cm) and the price is 35.95 GBP. It is located in the Garden Room section on our site. You can either go to the Garden Room section on our catalogue page and go through the pages until you get to it or you can use the search facility on our site and enter "DR2" and it will come straight up for you. Shipping is free on UK orders. The site is secure for ordering. If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

Dear Cat Many of our clothes and soft furnishings have been stencilled very successfully using Liquitex concentrated acrylic paints. They are on our site under accessories and in art and craft stores such as Michael's. We have had success with Golden acrylics too. Both paints are machine washable on fabric. Many art stores sell a medium to mix with paints. We've never tried it as Liquitex has always worked for us. The brushes that we offer are great for both walls and fabrics. If you would like specialist advice on particular aspects of stencilling fabric call Helen at our office as she decorates lots of fabrics. All details for contacting us are on the contact section of the site.
