Aubusson Carpets & tapestries have been made in the French town of Aubusson since the 16th Century. Roses are a predominant theme in Aubusson designs and they are usually executed in a palette of muted colours; buffs, rose pinks & browns being amongst the favourites. The overall effect is soft, sophisticated & feminine.

Baroque The Baroque style originated in Italy and was popular during the 17th & 18th Centuries. It was a movement inspired by the Painting & Sculpture of the time and tended towards the theatrical. A sense of drama and a love of the ornate pervades the Baroque style. There have been periodic revivals amongst interior designers over the years. It was much in vogue in the 1930's. Baroque colours were rich and opulent, embellished by much gilding.

Colonial The simple shapes of this design were adapted from work done by Moghul decorators in 17th India at the court of Shah Jahan, the builder of the Taj Mahal. The shapes are Persian in origin, and as with much of Moghul art, is a combination of Hindu and Muslim influences. A stencil from the Print Room range would normally contain a print, but the design provided the perfect backdrop for this elegant 1940's shoe stencil from our Vintage category.
