THE STENCIL LIBRARY

The Celtic style of decoration, with its curvilinear ornamentation, was practised by the native tribes of western Europe over some twelve centuries and remained the dominant style of architectural ornament in Scotland and Ireland until well into the 11th Century.

Border Stencils

Tile & Motif Stencils

The Border stencils show many examples of the inventive use of spirals, knots and interlacing forms. The Motif stencils include several strange zoomorphic animals, reptiles and birds intertwining with each other and themselves. There are also stencils based on the famous Celtic Cross theme.

Panel Stencils

Lettering Stencils

The Panel stencils again depict the omnipresent creatures intertwining themselves into endless knots alongside panels of stylised plants and vines. The Lettering stencils are based on the Half-Uncial style which was common to the illuminated manuscripts of the time. There is also an alphabet of knotwork initials.
